Nissan goes back to Kawaishinsha
Co., an automobile factory founded by Masujiro Hashimoto in the Azabu-Hiroo
district, Tokyo in 1911. Hashimoto was a pioneer in the automotive industry of
Japan since its inception. In 1914, a small passenger car was developed based
on its own design, and in the following year the car made its debut in the
market under the name of Dat. Dat represents the first letters of the surnames
of the three main supports of Hashimoto: Kenjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro
Takeuchi.
Jitsuyo Jidosha Co., Ltd., another
predecessor of Nissan, was established in Osaka in 1919 to manufacture
three-wheeled Gorham vehicles, designed by American engineer William R. Gorham.
The tools, components and materials were imported by the company from the
United States, making it one of the most modern of those times. The first
small-sized passenger car Datsun left the Yokohama plant in April 1935, and
vehicle exports to Australia were also launched in the same year. In a move to
recover from the technological vacuum of the Second World War years, Nissan
made a strategic alliance with Austin Motor Co. Ltd. of the United Kingdom in
1952, and the first Austin left the line a year later. Nissan was the first
Japanese builder to receive the Deming Award for Engineering Excellence in
1960. In this period, Nissan emphasized a strong organization to support the
next stage of the company's expansion.
The Nissan compliance certificate
is available for all Nissan manufactured by the European market.
Nissan began to develop
manufacturing operations outside of Japan, starting with Taiwan in 1959 and
establishing Yulon, Mexico in 1961. In the 1980s, Nissan established two
strategic bases in manufacturing outside of Japan: Nissan Motor Manufacturing
Corp., in U.S. and Nissan Motor Manufacturing in the United Kingdom. Currently,
there are Nissan manufacturing and assembly plants in 17 countries around the
world.
Looking at the Japanese market,
Nissan opened the Kyushu plant in 1975, remodeled in 1992 with the most
advanced technology. In addition, in 1994 the Iwaki plant went into operation
to manufacture the new V6 engines. Nissan also initiated activities related to
the development of electric vehicles, other sources of clean energy, and
recycling.
